Basement laundry faucets “whistling”, why?

Ask a Plumber

Why from time to time the basement laundry faucets “whistle”?

Yet, no drips from faucets. After tightening them real hard, whistling stops.

I learnt furnace/ventilation system needs dripping water to operate.

Is this the reason?

Will “whistling” cause the water-bill to go up?

My thanks,

Simon

This one has us stumped. Some suggestions are a loose stem on the faucets, or it could be sound coming from a toilet or another fixture nearby. Really this is one of those situations that a plumbing technician should come out and have a listen to better diagnose.
