Can unused drains dry up?

Ask a Plumber

It’s been a while since one of the drains in my house has been used. Can unused drains dry up?

  1. Yes. It’s fairly common with drains for soaker tubs during the summer, when they aren’t used as often. If a drain pipe is not used it will dry out. High winds can also dry out some drains. When the drain is dry you will probably know, because the trap will let sewer gas up the drain and there will be a very bad smell.

Over time it may clear up with use, simply by pouring water into the drain. Your best bet is to prevent this from happening in the first place — run some water through all of your drains you don’t use that often to keep them from drying out.
