My kitchen sink is far away from the water heater consequently it wastes a lot of water

Ask a Plumber

My kitchen sink is far away from the water heater consequently it wastes a lot of water waiting for hot water, can a small pump be installed between the hot water line along with a backup valve and temperature control to circulate the cold water in the hot water line back through the cold water pipe to the hot water heater?

That is a great question and the short answer is absolutely yes! We call it a recirculation line. We hook up a small pump near your hot water tank and then run a waterline from it all the way to the furthest fixture in the home if possible (in this case it sounds like your kitchen sink). When this is done hot water is continuously looped around from your old hot water line, through the new line back to the hot water tank. This allows you to have hot water as soon as you turn on the tap. I actually had the same problem in my home last year and did this. It works amazingly!
