Ask a Plumber

Whenever I flush my toilet, it double flushes. I’ve tried replacing the flapper but it still happens. How can I fix it to stop this from happening?

  1. Ensure you have the right kind of flapper for the toilet. If you installed a standard toilet flapper on a low volume flush toilet, you may get a double flush. Another common problem is there is a small tube in the back of the toilet tank that is supposed to fit inside the cylinder tower in the middle of the tank. This fills the water level in the bowl after each flush. If that has popped out your toilet may flush twice as well. An easy fix, just put the tube back in the cylinder.
