Odour coming from the basement bathroom

Ask a Plumber

There’s a foul odour coming from the bathroom in our basement. We don’t use it unless we have company, but it’s unpleasant and embarrassing. What can we do?

Most plumbing systems are designed with a trap attached to the fixtures to prevent foul odours from entering the house. These traps contain water to seal out foul odours, but if the water seal evaporates, that’s when the odours may enter the house. Luckily, it is possible there is a pretty simple fix for this problem: Pour a bucket of water in each trap; the sink, shower and floor drain. This will prevent unpleasant plumbing odours from entering the house from the traps.

If the problem persists inspect any visual drainage plumbing for any small cracks or holes. If you find one this is possibly where the odour is coming from. A repair will need to be done. Depending on the location you may be able to do it yourself or may need to call a plumber. If you can still not find the location of the odour it might be an idea to call in a plumber for further investigation and possibly do a smoke test.
