Trouble connecting ABS pipe

Ask a Plumber

Hi

I understand that when gluing abs pipe, the pipe is pushed fully into the connector. I have a situation that doesn’t allow that. I have a toilet drain pipe that is about 1/2″ too short. When I place the flange into the drain pipe, only 1″ of the flange pipe enters the drain pipe. Is this 1″ enough to make a solid connection?

Thanks

I would strongly recommend making sure the pipe is pushed all the way into the socket especially on a toilet flange fitting. With the extra weight and stress that fitting can have it is especially important that it is in all the way. What is stopping it from going in all the way?

    • Thanks for the reply. The finished floor will be 3/4″ and the drain pipe was cut level with the subfloor. Those two things prevent full insertion.
Hear what you are saying about pressure. What if i was to put in some 2×4 supports around the drain pipe to support the flange?

To do it right you would need to have that pipe extended. If it is in a basement floor breaking up the concrete around would give you room to cut the pipe, add a coupling on and extend the pipe up to where it’s needed. If it is on a second-floor getting access underneath would mean cutting the ceiling from there you would be able to cut the pipe at a coupling and extend the pipe up to where it’s needed. It is not the easiest job but to do it right that is what is required.

    • That’s what I’ll do then. I always defer to the pros!!

FYI: I got a hold of an engineer at Ibex Inc. (manufacturer of abs pipe) and he suggested extending the pipe as well with the reason that, with a flange, the strength of the connection with the drain pipe really depends on the last third of the flange pipe. Even though it is only 1/2″, he would really be worried about the connection leaking.

      Thanks
