Usually, when a sump pump keeps humming, it means that it the impellers are jammed or the discharge line is blocked. At this time of the year we often find that ice has built up in the discharge line and is blocking water from exiting. If this problem is not addressed it can lead to a bigger problems such as your sump barrel overflowing or your pump burning out. This will potentially flood the surrounding area.
To fix this check your discharge pipe to make sure that no ice has built up over the winter. If everything checks out with no ice you may want to shut the power off to the pump and check that the impellers are freely moving.
