When I open my dishwasher, there is still some water in it, even if the cycle is finished. Why doesn’t my dishwasher completely drain itself?

When a dishwasher is working properly, it is supposed to leave some water in the unit at the end of each cycle to keep the element type heater, used for drying the dishes, from burning up. If, however, a lot of water stays in the sump, you could be dealing with a clogged drain or a partially clogged dishwasher filter. The filter is at the bottom of the dishwasher under the screen. Cleaning the dishwasher filter is relatively simple. Just unscrew or remove the screen, and clean out the inside.

If you believe it’s a clogged drain causing the problem, reach out to a professional to guide you to the right fix. Usually specialty tools are required for this.
